We’re ‘Shore’ the 70s was a strong decade!

The 1970s, the decade of Elton John (he released 12 albums in 10 years!), the formation of ABBA, John Travolta's appearance in Grease, the start of the Star Wars saga and release of Jaws. Let's not forget trousers became a fashion statement that saw a rise of people strutting about in 'bell-bottoms' at the disco! For us, we found ourselves strutting about our two new premises as we opened our second Inverness-based premise on Shore Street, and introduced ourselves to the streets of Elgin. On top of opening new doors for our business, we strengthened our windows. Check out our latest feature in the press as we move through the decades. The concept of double glazing is said to have originated in Scotland with evidence that it was first implemented in Victorian times. However, the 70s into the 80s was really when the UK started to see the boom of double glazing, and with that, we introduced the product to our portfolio. In the words of former Managing Director, David Dowling:
Back then, double glazing was either something you fitted on the outside or on the inside of the window. People would screw it into what they already had, but it steamed up on the inside and left lots of condensation. So we made the move to get it stuck together and provide already made double glazing for people. It just made sense to have double glazing in the Highlands because of all the cold weather.
From some further exploration, we learn that only about 8% of UK households had double glazing installed in the 1970s. Nonetheless, with double glazing become standard in the 80s, uptake has only rocketed, and with that we have provided many customers in the Highlands with the installation. All in all, between new showrooms, and the provision of secondary glazing, we are 'Shore' the 70s was a great decade! Take a look at our full timeline from the 1950s to the 2020s here.
