How you can reduce your carbon footprint at home?
Items you can replace at home to reduce your Carbon footprint?
A recent report by the Guardian suggests that if Scotland does not do everything it can to reduce its carbon emissions, by 2030 we could be living in an “apocalypse of flooded towns, dead forests and polluted rivers” Many people would argue this and say that what difference is one person reducing their carbon footprint going to do to help? There are however, some simple items you can replace at home which can help to reduce your personal carbon footprint and if done by the 5.5 million living in Scotland, could go a long way to helping Scotland reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Although the UK Government has got rid of the Feed-in tariff, solar panels are still a great way to reduce your carbon footprint as well as your energy bills! If you had them installed before 31st March, you will still receive the full benefit of the Feed-in tariff as well. The government are implementing a new scheme to replace the feed-in tariff on the 1st January 2020 which will be called the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). The new scheme will pay for any excess electricity generated to the grid. Octopus Energy, a 100% renewable energy supplier, has stated they will pay 5.5p/kWh exported. This is actually higher than the existing Export Tariff rate under the Feed-In Tariff scheme.
Another item in your home that you can replace to help reduce your carbon footprint is your external doors. The amount of heat lost through your front and back door can be huge and at Cairngorm we have a full range of Composite and PVC doors. Our Apeer doors are all A-rated by design and A-rated for energy. Obviously reducing the amount of heat lost out of your home will reduce your energy bills as you will use less heating your home hence reducing bills and your carbon footprint! The same applies if you were to replace old, single glazed windows and replace them with new double/triple glazed windows. You would lose a lot less heat through the windows!
Other simple things like turning off the lights when going out and sealing any draughty areas in the house also contribute to lowering your carbon footprint. The majority of these changes will not only help you to reduce your carbon footprint but will also help you to reduce your bills!
